John Davis

John Davis

President

John Davis is in his twenty-third year as President of NCFREE, a non-partisan, political research organization founded in 1983 by North Carolina business leaders.

Davis is Editor and Senior Political Analyst for the Almanac of North Carolina Politics, a 750-page book of political facts and figures published each election cycle. The Almanac profiles North Carolina’s 34 statewide elected officials, including executive and judicial, along with the state’s federal delegation and the 170 members of the North Carolina General Assembly.

Davis is best known for his campaign forecasting ability. During the four elections of this decade, he correctly projected the winner in 751 of 780 campaigns, for an accuracy rate of 97%. As one of the state’s leading authorities on state legislative and congressional districts, Davis is quoted regularly in the press and was cited in oral arguments before the North Carolina Supreme Court and in written opinions by the state Supreme Court during redistricting litigation earlier in the decade.

John Davis is also recognized nationally as a pioneer of state legislative political research. He has helped business leaders in over half of the states in the country create political research and education organizations like NCFREE, and is a co-founder of United for State Action, a national organization of state political research professionals organized in 1986.

Davis is from Graceville, Florida, a small town he like to refer to as, “… an Eastern North Carolina town located in the Florida panhandle.” He is a graduate of William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. John and his wife, Kathy, raised their five children in Raleigh. Two graduates of Florida State University, a 2007 graduate of East Carolina, and twin boys: one at UNC-Chapel Hill and one at NC State.
